The Others.
Sometimes I get invited to events...sometimes. Right, usually I do no get the opportunity to get out of the office but I was invited to a social at an Architects office. Naturally, I accepted if not for the opportunity to get out of the office sooner that day. I enjoy going to those events though and this one was intriguing as I had interacted with these Architects via email and over the phone but never in person.
It's rare that I get to meet the folks on the design teams that I'm on. So it was nice to be able to get out and share some drinks with these people. I usually feel at home with most Architects, they are fun, we have a lot of similar experiences, and the clients are always fun to talk about.
It's interesting to hear the Architect's perspective on projects. They are usually so focused on the building itself and what's going on inside it and like us, there are intriguing accounts as to how the building was birthed. This is usually what gets discussed at these socials. We all have our heads down, so focused on the details of our own professions that when you finally come up for breath and can really step back to see the gestalt...well that's when you get that stupid grin on your face.
The other topic that is fun to discuss is bad design. We all can think of a place around town where the design, for whatever reason, was poorly executed. What makes it fascinating is to hear what the Architects believe about it if nothing more than to hear a different perspective.
The other element that continues to surprise me is its a very small world. Especially in the design community, especially in Atlanta, it's like living in a small town. I continually meet new people who know people that I've worked with on past projects. It's a fun community to be a part of.
